Sharjah has announced the start of construction on a new Exhibitions and Conventions Centre, a cultural and events development set to shape the emirate’s exhibition landscape for the Sharjah International Book Fair.
The announcement was made by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. It was confirmed that work will begin following the acquisition of a strategically located land plot near the Emirates–Al Dhaid–Khorfakkan roads for AED 146 million.
Sharjah International Book Fair to Move in 2027
The landmark project, with an estimated total cost of Dh500 million, is expected to be completed within 22 to 24 months. It aims to open officially in November 2027. Upon completion, the venue will host the 46th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair.
Strategic Location and Improved Accessibility for Sharjah International Book Fair
The project was originally planned near Sharjah Mosque, but geological challenges at the site prompted a reassessment. After evaluating alternatives, the selected plot was chosen for its positioning along a major transport corridor. There is also an added benefit of a rear access road to ease traffic congestion during large-scale events.
Care was also taken to preserve residential areas, with one earlier site option dismissed to avoid disruption to the Al Badi neighbourhood.
Expanding Sharjah’s Events Portfolio
Beyond the book fair, the new centre will host a wide range of international exhibitions, conventions, and cultural festivals. This will further strengthening Sharjah’s status as a regional hub for knowledge and culture.
While the new venue comes, Expo Centre Sharjah will continue to operate its full calendar of commercial exhibitions. Several major events, have already transitioned to the new location, with more expected to follow.
Traffic, Mobility, and Future Planning
Addressing concerns around traffic during peak events, particularly in Al Taawun, His Highness reaffirmed ongoing efforts to improve road connectivity and visitor flow. Future infrastructure plans also include a new train station near Al Khulafa Al Rashideen crossroads on Al Wahda Street.
