From Hours to Minutes: The New Rail Network Connecting UAE and Oman
The new rail network connecting UAE and Oman will reduce the travel time from Sohar to Abu Dhabi. Oman and Etihad Rail Company signed an agreement with Mubadala Investment Company, known as the Etihad Rail project. The cooperation agreement aims to build a 303-kilometre railway network that will link the Gulf countries. His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, announced the passenger and freight railway project on September 2022.
The AED11 billion investment in the UAE-Oman Rail Network will transform the infrastructure, transport, and logistics sectors. It aims for many other benefits like reducing the cost of supply chains, increasing efficiency and raising market competitiveness. Passenger trains running up to 200 kilometres per hour will reduce the travel time from Sohar in Oman to Abu Dhabi to 1 hour and 40 minutes, while the same from Sohar to Al Ain will be 47 minutes. Freight trains will run up to 120 kilometres per hour, providing a swift and efficient transport solution.
