300-year-old fortress in the Khorfakkan region that has been undergoing restoration. The old fortress will serve as a tourist attraction that is located in the village.
One of UAE’s hidden gems, the 300-year-old fortress in Khor Fakkan has been a favourite to many tourists and ever since they have flocked to the hamlet in Wadi Washi to see its houses, some of which date back centuries.
Heading toward Khorfakkan on the new Sharjah – Khorfakkan highway opens up a vista of the beautiful Al Rafisah Dam. Originally built in the 1980s, the dam has had an upgrade with a new visitor centre and rest area. Travel time from Sharjah to Khorfakkan has been reduced to 45 minutes, due to the new road, allowing more visitors to enjoy the serene pleasures of the area where a large, clear lake with boating facilities is overlooked by the magnificent Hajar mountains. The scenery is unmatched with the sandstone mountain range looming over a pure azure reservoir with its accompanying tranquil green landscape and man-made waterfall, perfect for nature lovers and outdoors enthusiasts.
There is a rest area, a mosque, outdoor play areas for children, a parking lot and supermarket as well as a popular restaurant with lake view. Part of the redevelopment has restored the nearby Wadi Shea Fortress and the surrounding old plantations. A kilometer-long walkway, fringed with palm trees, circumventing the dam, wends its way along the mountain’s edge, through the plantations up to the fort.
The location of the fortress that is surrounded by greenery and mountains, attracts a lot of tourist. Earlier, Sheikh Dr Sultan also inaugurated Najd Al Maqsar village, a community in Wadi Washi, where the old fortress is located. Ever since the fortress has been considered for renovation.
The new Sharjah-Khorfakkan highway passes through the eastern Hajar Mountains and is characterized by tunneling through the mountains through small and large tunnels. Bridges and tunnels for new railway lines can also be seen crossing the route.
There is such a beautiful view in the valley called “Wadi Shees”. There is Al Rafiza Dam on the left side.An impressive fort built on an entire hill of stone and earth. Many of the roofs are thatched with palm leaves. At first glance, it looks like it is in Georgia or something.
300-year-old fort was renovated last year. Looking down from the handrails of the parking lot is a valley full of green plantations. The name of this village is Najid Al Miksar. Hence the name of the fort is Najid al-Mikhsar. Abandoned for a century, the fort has been revived with all the amenities as a part of tourism development. The name of the fort is engraved on a large rock placed at the beginning of the steps to the hill.
It’s expanded in many levels upwards, stone steps and small houses. Above them there is the observation tower of the fort named ‘Al Maqsar Tower’ on the top of the hill. There are mosques and tombs as part of this village. Thirteen hotel rooms with modern amenities and public toilets are attached to the fort.
If you are going to Khorfokan, you should not forget to visit Najid Al Miksar Fort. Once you cross the dam and take the road to the right, I assure you, you will be in for a visual heaven.
