They’re never going to be described as the most elegant of racing animals, all hooves and humps thundering down the sand track, but they certainly do know how to move. While camel racing of old involved human jockeys, today’s racers are rather more safely ridden by tiny little robots perched precariously on top of their mount’s hump.
In a similar fashion to horse racing, they’re lined up in pens and race around a track to the finish line, hotly pursued by owners and racing fanatics who often drive alongside the track yelling encouragement as they go.
The camel racing season is a great fun event to watch, but don’t forget the cultural aspect.
