New Speed Limit in UAE 2023

New Speed Limit in UAE 2023

Abu Dhabi implements a new speed limit system on Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Road from May 1, 2023. This aims to enhance road safety and encourage slower vehicles to use the right lanes. As part of this system, drivers who fail to meet the minimum speed limit will levy a fine of AED 400. This article will discuss the new system and its implications for drivers.

What is the new speed limit system?

The new system implemented by the Abu Dhabi Police applies a minimum speed limit of 120km/hr on the two left-most lanes in both directions. The maximum speed limit on all four lanes remains at 140km/hr on Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Road. The right-most lane is to accommodate heavy vehicles, and the second lane is from the right. Slower vehicles and heavy vehicles are to use the lanes on the right, where they can travel at a safe and appropriate speed.

Why is there an implementation of a new speed limit system?

On UAE motorways, a common problem is drivers remaining in the second-left lane, causing traffic congestion and potentially endangering other road users. According to Thomas Edelmann, managing director of Road Safety UAE, these drivers may be unaware that they are driving slower than surrounding traffic and not moving to the right lanes. Some drivers believe that only the far-right lane is for slow vehicles like lorries, and the second-right track is for vans and pickups, leaving only the two left-most lanes for “normal” cars. Consequently, the right-most lane often remains empty, while “normal” cars crowd the two left-most lanes. This lane-hugging behaviour can disrupt traffic flow and raise accident risks.

What are the consequences of not meeting the minimum speed limit?

The Abu Dhabi Police will fine motorists AED 400 if they fail to meet the minimum speed limit. It is trivial for drivers to adhere to traffic rules and regulations to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.

According to an online poll conducted by the Abu Dhabi Police, 78% of more than 3,400 respondents were in favour of the new minimum speeds.
