Speed Limit Abu Dhabi 2023
Starting from April 1, 2023, Abu Dhabi Police announces a new minimum speed limit on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, named after Dubai’s Vice President and Ruler opened in November 2016. The 62-kilometre motorway is constructed for Dh2.1 billion. It has a capacity of 8,000 vehicles an hour with four lanes in each direction. It passes through the Al Maha forest, Khalifa Port Industrial Zone, and Bida Khalifa, and directly links to Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi airport, and Al Ain Road.
What is the new regulation, and when will the new regulation take effect?
Abu Dhabi Police recently announced a new regulation that imposes a minimum speed limit of 120 km/h on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, the major highway linking Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The new rule will come into effect on April 1, with fines for violators enforced from May 1 onwards.
Why introduce the new regulation?
The primary objective of the new regulation is to enhance road safety. It also ensures that slow-moving vehicles use the appropriate lanes and always yield to faster-moving ones. This regulation will lead to smoother traffic flow and reduced congestion on the busy highway.
What are the details of the new regulation?
Director of the Central Operations Sector at Abu Dhabi Police, Major General Ahmed Saif bin Zaytoun Al Muhairi confirmed that the first and second lanes from the left must have a minimum speed limit of 120 km/h. Drivers who do not maintain this speed on these lanes will face a fine. The last lane will be restricted to heavy vehicles only. The third lane with a speed of 140 km/hr will not have any minimum speed violations.
What are the implications for drivers?
The new regulation means that the drivers moving on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road must be mindful of their speed and lane usage to avoid fines. Slow-moving vehicles must use the appropriate lanes. The heavy vehicles must remain in the last lane only.
The new minimum speed limit introduced by Abu Dhabi Police on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, the unified policy on penalties for traffic violators across the GCC, and Abu Dhabi Police’s SMS alerts campaign, reflects the UAE’s commitment to promoting road safety.
