Muscat is the capital city of Oman. The rocky Western Al Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape of Muscat. I will discuss in another article about the Things to do in Muscat  city , ie near by tourist places to be visited in the Muscat city.

Springs of different kinds are widespread in various parts of the Sultanate. All these places are not less than 80 to 90 kilometers away from Muscat city. You can visit these places in a one day trip from Muscat and back to hotel in Muscat by night.

Nakhal Fort:

The fort is approximately 120 kilometers (75 mi) to the west of Muscat. You have to drive about an hour from Muscat towards Barka in Al Batinah region (approximately 30km from Barka) to reach Nakhal. (Please ask the way to the fort at any of the local grocery shop or cafeteria’s in Nakhal or take a GPS with you to ease the navigation without any hazel) After spending about an hour exploring the fort and near by garden, you can move on to the Nakhal hot springs.

Nakhal hot springs or Ain A’Thowarah:

This is a popular picnic area near Nakhal fort. The tourist spot have plenty of palm trees and narrow flowing water called Wadi. You can spent some time walking in the hot springs enjoying the beauty of mountain and wadi (The stones are bit slippery, be careful).  Note that there are no many restaurants available in the near by area. So recommend you pack up your lunch and water along from Muscat so as to spend some quality time at the hot springs.

Out of curiosity, let me just share with you my experience of having a FREE NATURAL PEDICURE at the Nakhal Springs. You just haveto stand in flowing springs without movement. After a while small fish begin to have a nibble on your dangling digits. It tickles at first and is a bit of a strange sensation but after a few seconds, you get used to it and it’s actually quite pleasant.

Important Note:

4×4 is not required to reach the fort or springs. There is no separate car park area while you can park at the side of the springs.
Ladies should make sure to dress conservatively if bathing.

Nakhal Fort opening hours:

Sat to Thurs: 9am to 4pm
Fridays: 8am to 11am
Entrance: 500bz adults, children free
